Graphics cards are critical to the VR gaming experience. Not only because it can provide amazing visual quality, but also because it can reduce side effects such as motion sickness and dizziness. Now, a team at AMD thinks it's time to change the way VR graphics are rendered.

Radeon's technical marketing specialist Gilbert Leung has released a short video showing the advantages of using Forward Rendering technology in VR games. For a comparative demonstration, Leung set up two identical PCs (both running "Robo Recall"): one with traditional delayed rendering and the other with the latest forward rendering path.

Deferred rendering first completes complex geometric calculations and then colors the pixels. Most of the current VR games that render graphics through Unreal 4 use this approach. Forward rendering takes a compromise, giving developers more rendering options to achieve higher frame rates. The PC frame rate with a forward rendering path is 90fps, while the delayed rendering is only 60fps.

Although deferred rendering can achieve some impressive visual effects, it is difficult to use with other technologies, and problems can occur when post-process anTI-aliasing technology is enabled at the same time. Forward rendering allows these techniques to be enabled to improve graphics fidelity and optimize the VR experience.

Raja Koduri, senior vice president and chief architect of Radeon Technologies, said: "AMD has been working to increase the popularity of VR, and the forward rendering path of Epic Unreal 4 is a big step towards this goal. All of Robo who have experienced Epic Players of Recall will be immediately attracted to the advantages of forward rendering. We are working with VR developers to explore the benefits of forward rendering because of its ability to implement beautiful and high-performance games on Radeon graphics cards."
