Festo's first turnkey Internet of Things solution

What are the four major factors driving the development of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things? The four major factors are network, resilience, energy efficiency and new business models. With the CPX-IoT gateway to the Internet of Things, Festo is paving the way for a secure and reliable connection with the cloud, which allows machine and system manufacturers and end users to significantly improve their overall device availability.
Fully networked "things" will simplify business life in the future. If the principles of the Internet of Things are applied to road traffic, the improved network will bring a series of advantages. For example, vehicles that optimize brake performance will become more energy efficient. After the traffic data is processed, a navigation system can guide the traffic diversion, which is adaptability. Connecting all traffic lights to the network can respond to changing traffic flows. This gave birth to a brand-new business model. The core question is: How much is a driver willing to pay for a green light?

Lay the foundation for Industry 4.0

Just as for future modern road traffic prospects, networking, resilience, energy efficiency, and new business models are key factors for the Industry 4.0 era. Festo is shaping the Industry 4.0 era through six key measures. Products and solutions developed for the Industrial 4.0 era, such as the digital pneumatics of the Festo Motion Terminal, have already taken off. These are the results of continuous R&D - R&D of the company's internal R&D, research network cooperation, and bionic learning network. The optimized supply chain makes the production process more efficient. However, if people in the digital age are not prepared for digital or fail to enter the role, then Industry 4.0 may fail. Therefore, "training 4.0" and "working environment 4.0" also came out.
We must make every effort to achieve the deeper goal of Industry 4.0 to achieve the integration of various functions across the system's margins. Michael Hoffmeister, Festo's newly established digital business management expert, explained: “That's why Festo worked closely with other members of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association to launch the Platform Industry 4.0 project to create a common reference architecture.”

Festo product key

As part of this architecture, Festo is using digital twins to build its own products and solutions into the common management layer of this reference architecture (RAMI). All Festo products have a QR code on the label. This is the Festo product key and provides access to a wealth of information. It is the key to the world of Industry 4.0.
In the future, a Festo product will receive a continuous digital upgrade because the Festo product key is linked to the newly created Festo App World. With Festo App World, you can purchase upgrades and services for specific components. These include mobile applications such as Festo Motion Terminal, web applications for the cloud, desktop applications, applications for programmable logic controllers, and firmware applications.

IoT gateways transmit data for analysis

Back here and now, Festo has launched its first turnkey solution for IoT-compatible components and display control board programs. The IoT Gateway CPX-IoT connects field-level components and modules, such as the Festo Motion Terminal (digital control terminal), the energy-saving monitoring module MSE6-E2M or the grabbing system, to the Festo cloud via the OPC UA interface. Use the cloud to process and monitor data. This can determine trend analysis, establish early warning systems, and automatically notify incidents. The IoT gateway provides a connection interface between the cloud and the controller to ensure that relevant information is communicated in the correct format on time.
With the IoT Gateway CPX-IoT, pre-configured display boards can be used for each Festo element – with additional customization. The dashboard is displayed through a browser, displaying charts and various traffic lights. Specific function widgets, such as components of the user interface, energy monitoring charts, preventive maintenance, and improvements to process performance data and overall device effectiveness, are clearly and logically arranged. The condition monitoring solution improves error diagnosis and fault recognition, establishes transparency for energy consumption, displays information clearly in a graph, and historical data can be queried.
Safe and reliable connection to Festo Cloud, personalized digitalization is the only way: the Internet of Things gateway CPX-IoT. Michael Hoffmeister, Festo's newly established digital business management expert, explained: “That's why Festo worked closely with other members of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association to launch the Platform Industry 4.0 project to create a common reference architecture.”
