Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are under constant competitive pressure to manufacture more full-featured high-speed printers, multifunction printers, and scanners at a lower price. In accordance with past practice, OEMs have always chosen a closed private environment. Zoran's Inferno has taken a different approach, using a common open source environment, embedded Linux, to provide a richer set of features, applications and tools for the development of next-generation printers, multifunction printers and scanners, and to further enhance product performance.

Advantages of using the Linux Inferno platform:
• Inferno integrates Zoran's IPS printing language interpretation software with an application programming interface (API). This allows OEMs to achieve optimal print performance effortlessly. The API allows OEMs to easily provision software configurations for specific print engines and improve product performance in new product designs.
• Zoran has developed an innovative multi-layer print engine driver with a real-time layer running on the flexRISC core of the Quatro® processor and a thin interface layer running on the Linux kernel (Thin Interface Layer) improves real-time accuracy and separates OEM-specific code from the open source Linux kernel.
• OEMs can develop devices ranging from entry to high performance, adding interactive touch screens, energy-efficient sleep modes, Gigabit Ethernet, IPsec network security, full print language support and other required features.

Shane Rau, director of IDC Computing and Storage Semiconductor Research, said, "More and more embedded device vendors are adopting SoC systems with fully programmable processor cores and IP (intellectual property) to develop the functionality required for specific application products. For example, IDC predicts that multi-function printer manufacturers' adoption of SOC will increase from 50% in 2009 to 80% in 2014. These SOCs will support developers to produce multi-function printers running high-end operating systems, supporting more powerful user interaction. Features, enhance enterprise and mobile connectivity, and further improve performance."

"Zooran uses embedded Linux as the foundation of the new Inferno platform. Its advanced multi-processing technology can best meet the needs of our customers. It can use Quatro's multi-core CPU to quickly develop high-performance, multi-functional products. With single-core CPU architecture In contrast, this approach leverages the advantages of multi-core technology to deliver higher performance at lower cost and power consumption,” said Simon Dolan, senior vice president and general manager of graphics at Zoran.

Zoran's Inferno is now available for the Quatro® 4300 and 4500 series processors. An updated version with new features and performance enhancements is released three times a year.
