Power line carrier communication uses existing power lines to transmit signals. Its working principle is as follows: data or voice modulation is transmitted through the power line on a carrier frequency of tens to hundreds of KHz, and the receiving end transmits the signal on the power line. The carrier is received and demodulated to restore the original voice or data. The carrier of the communication is the off-the-shelf power line, and there is no need to re-route the communication line like wired communication. Nor does it require complex transmission and reception devices to transmit information like wireless transmission. It does not need to set up additional communication lines, and does not occupy valuable wireless spectrum resources, so it is suitable for small group internal (usually between the same power transformer) to form a local area network to achieve data or voice transmission purposes.

The LM1893 is a power line carrier communication integrated circuit developed by National Semiconductor. It integrates all functions of transmitting and receiving data, enabling half-duplex communication of serial data. Only a small number of external components can form a complete power line carrier communication system, suitable for industrial automatic control systems, building data or voice communication, centralized control of household appliances, emergency call systems in hospitals, fire alarms and computer data transmission applications.
