Sony returns to OLED camp after 10 years

: Just when the outside world thought that the Japanese electronics giant was on the sunset in Xishan, Sony told the story of "I'm still here" with a return to growth track.

In the afternoon of March 27, Sony announced that it officially launched the OLED TV A1 in the Chinese market. After a 10-year return to the OLED TV camp, Sony (China) Chairman and President Gao Qiaoyang told the First Financial reporter that this reflects the strategy of Sony's high-end products, and after ten years of hard work, the civilian use of OLED technology has matured.

While sticking to the consumer electronics market, Sony is also involved in new areas. In the Chinese market, Sony introduced the programmable education robot suite KOOV for the first time this year. Takahashi Yang revealed that this was developed by Sony last year. Currently, it is only sold in Japan and China. The purpose is to cultivate children's creativity, especially in terms of inspiring children's programming skills.

In the third quarter of 2016 fiscal year (October-December 2016), Sony China’s sales revenue returned to growth, up 12.8% year-on-year. This was the first time Sony’s China business had been sold since Sony’s 2014 resale of the VAIO notebook computer business. Get re-growth. Gao Qiaoyang said that this is due to concentrating efforts on high-end products, targeting wealthy, fashionable and young target customers, and streamlining the organization and reducing operating costs.

Sony China’s fiscal year 2017 target is sales growth and profit growth, both exceeding the increase in local GDP. Takahashi Yang revealed that following Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou, Sony will set up its fifth direct store in China in the second half of this year. In addition to the electronic whole product, the image sensors and other components business will be the most promising growth point for Sony China.

Talk about OLED: Sony is not limited by the panel

As early as 2007, Sony had launched the world's first OLED TV, but later it has been the main LCD TV. Why did Sony return to the OLED TV camp after a decade?

Gao Qiaoyang said in an exclusive interview with the First Financial Reporter that after 10 years of product launch, Sony did not stop developing OLEDs. In the medical and broadcasting fields, OLED monitors have always been provided, but if they get civil use, one is price. The second is technical problems. After a decade of hard work, technical problems have been solved and OLED panels can be mass-produced and applied to Sony's products. Coupled with Sony's technological accumulation on television, such as processing chips, Sony can either choose to do LCD TVs, or choose to do OLED TVs. At present, Sony will target OLED TVs for high-end products.

This year, quantum dot TV and OLED TV have met with fierce competition. Sony also once took the lead in the industry to use quantum dot backlight technology to improve the picture quality of TVs. Now it is back to the OLED TV camp. However, the current global OLED TV panel is only one supplier of LGD. The upstream resources are limited and the cost is relatively high. The Sony OLED A1's 55-inch and 65-inch products are priced at 24,999 yuan and 35,999 yuan respectively.

In this regard, Takahashi Yang said that the reason why Sony chose OLED, because of the use of OLED, Sony can make sound and picture integration, no external speakers of the unique product. Sony does not have its own panel factory, but it is not restricted, and other technologies are constantly trying.

Talking about educational robots: not ordinary toys

Sony, which has launched epoch-making products such as WALKMAN, does not want to be seen as "heroic and late." While it focuses on high-end in the consumer electronics field, it has also introduced new gadgets.

In February of this year, Sony's KOOV, the programmable education robot suite launched in Japan and the Chinese market, was refreshing. A pile of colorful plastic pellets can “toss” small robots of various shapes.

Gao Qiaoyang told CBBC reporter that KOOV is not just a toy. Programming is the core. Children can download existing software to make toys, and they can also create new methods and make different robots.
