U.S. Department of Energy allocates $4.5 million in financial subsidies to Momentive to develop LEDs

Momentive Performance MateriaLS will receive US$4.5 million in financial subsidies from the US Department of Energy to continue developing breakthrough technologies to achieve low-cost production of solid-state lighting diodes (LEDs) and improve the performance of LED sources . LED lamps consume 75% less energy than other common lighting tools and have a longer service life, but currently LED lighting tools are more expensive to produce than traditional lighting tools. The US Department of Energy's funding for Momentive was announced on October 26, 2009.

Eric Thaler, Chief Technology Officer of Momentive Advanced Materials Group, said that the first batch of subsidies for this innovative funding program can be shared with an inspiring mission to create a low-cost, safe, low-carbon energy future in the United States. with pleasure. We will use this subsidy to assist in the development of commercial-grade technologies, processes and equipment to meet the cost-effective mass production needs of energy-efficient LED products. Correspondingly, this will also help drive a process that will change the industry landscape in the United States and the rest of the world, from the current lighting technology to solid-state lighting technology. The development of LED-based solid-state lighting technology will have a huge impact on people's daily lives, which will save a lot of energy, and will also bring breakthrough general-purpose lighting design and application.

The US Department of Energy estimates that by 2025, relying on appropriate R&D funding to replace incandescent and fluorescent light sources with solid-state lighting can reduce lighting consumption across the United States by 29%. LED lighting is not only more energy efficient, but it is also richer in functionality than traditional lighting, and can be integrated with a wide range of structures, components and design elements to enable a wide range of innovative applications.

The two-year energy research project, initiated by Momentive, will use Momentive's platform technology to conduct research. The project has established a cross-enterprise R&D team that specializes in ammonia heating GaN bulk single crystal growth technology, high pressure/high temperature reactor development and LED equipment testing and development. Also participating in this award-winning project with Momentive is Soraa Ltd. and Advanced Photonic Crystals LLC. Soraa is founded by world-class experts in GaN materials and equipment. Advanced Photonic Crystals LLC produces innovative lasers and optical crystals in the United States, and the company's technical expertise in autoclave engineering and crystal growth is playing a role in this project.

The US Department of Energy conducted a rigorous review of approximately 3,700 project applications and selected some of the ambitious research projects that will be funded. One of the Momentive award-winning project proposals is one percent. For nearly 70 years, Momentive has been leading the market with its technical solutions, which have had a positive impact and improved people's daily lives. This funding is another example of the tradition of Momentive.
