Analog Devices Introduces New Dual White LED Flash Driver ADP1655

Analog Devices, Inc. recently introduced a dual white LED (light-emitting diode) flash driver that maximizes the limited LED drive current of digital cameras and increases flash brightness to over 200 lumens for improved photo quality . The ADP1655, an inductive-based flash driver, enhances the reliability of high-resolution cameras in cellular handsets, digital cameras, camcorders, PDAs and other portable devices with cameras, especially in dark environments. In cellular handset applications, the new transmitter's unique transmit shielding feature allows the camera flash to operate at higher currents, and the phone's RF transceiver can operate simultaneously to monitor cellular base stations and discover incoming signals.

The ADP1655 integrates a 2MHz synchronous boost converter, a 500mA programmable current source, and an I2C interface to easily program timers and currents and read back data related to system operation and safety control.

The ADP1655's flash current accuracy of 5% allows the camera to increase the current flowing into the LED to increase the brightness of the flash and does not exceed the safety threshold that triggers the phone to turn off.

In addition, the new driver includes a high-side current source that allows the flash LED string to be connected to the camera's ground without the need to connect the other end of the LED to the IC. This allows designers to simplify printed circuit board layout, reduce circuit trace length, and reduce heat dissipation, allowing for a more compact layout to design the camera circuit.
