Cree promises to be the first company to produce LEDs with 6-inch substrates
In the recent LED lighting design seminar held by Arrow, Mr. Chuck Swoboda, CEO of Cree, gave a keynote speech and gave optimistic recognition for the rapid penetration of SSL. In his speech, he pointed out the progress of LED adoption in general lighting applications, much earlier than many analysts predicted. Mr. Swoboda pointed out that although LED epitaxy technology is close to its peak efficiency, LED light efficiency can still be improved from optical fluorescence and packaging.
Mr. Swoboda pointed out that in 2010, LED will occupy 4% of the general lighting market. In a survey he conducted, one viewer asked Mr. Swoboda to comment on the prediction that “LEDs will occupy 80% of the lighting market by 2020â€. Mr. Swoboda replied quickly. “I hope it won't take that long. I want to know how to do this in 2015.â€
Mr. Swoboda also pointed out that using larger wafers will soon reduce costs because a 6-inch wafer can produce double the chip compared to a 4-inch wafer. He promised that Cree will be the first company to mass produce 6-inch nitride (Indium Gallium Nitride) LEDs.
