Abstract: Capacitive sensing buttons and slider controllers are fast becoming the ubiquitous design and feature on many computers and peripherals. Cypress Semiconductor's CapSense multimedia family of products (CY8C20×24) is ideal for space applications. This article will give a brief introduction to the Cypress Semiconductor Multimedia Series, discuss its key features, and outline typical design applications.

The Cypress CapSense Multimedia Series (CY8C20×24) is based on Cypress's unique Programmable System-on-Chip (PSoC) with optimized capacitive sensing for the notebook, computer and PC peripheral components markets. This product line can meet specific applications including: notebook multimedia controllers, capacitive sensing displays / printer controllers and wireless keyboard / mouse scrolling controllers. The series is available in a variety of packages to meet different I/O requirements—16 –QFN (CY8C20224), 24-QFN (CY8C20324), 28-SSOP (CY8C20524), and 32-QFN (CY8C20424). In addition to a three-pin interface for I2C communication (INT, I2CDTA, I2CCLK), the number of I/Os that can be used to design various pin configurations is shown in Table 1 below:

All I/O for the multimedia series is universal. I/O supports both I2C communication and LED driver or sense input. This makes it easier to lay out the layout and routing of the product.

The multimedia family supports up to 25 LEDs, 25 capacitive buttons and a variable length capacitive sensing slider. This product line also utilizes CapSense Successive Approximation Sensing (CSA). CSA has been proven to withstand a variety of AC, RF and other environmental noise disturbances.

In addition to basic button and slider functions, the multimedia line also supports proximity sensing. Proximity sensing is the ability to detect the proximity of a human finger or hand without having to directly contact a capacitive sensing element. Proximity sensing can be an important part of a differentiated industrial design. Designers may wish to control LED lighting actions in response to proximity events. Proximity controllers can also be used to control system wake-up actions to avoid the user's waiting time to wake up a PC, monitor, laptop or keyboard/mouse.

In addition to controlling the basic LED on/off function, the CY8C20x24 series can also be used to control LED action. LED action constitutes an important part of the final look and feel of the product. Typical LED action requirements we observe on the market are: LED brightness adjustment, LED color mixing, and two-color LED. With the flexibility of PSoC, the action of a single LED can be modulated to the desired effect.

The multimedia line also features a very unique feature set - the bootloader. With the boot loader, field firmware upgrades can be achieved without removing the capacitive sensor board from the system. This significantly reduces development time and speeds up system internal debugging. If the firmware needs to be modified when the system is assembled, the host processor can directly load the new firmware into the assembled module.

Figure 1 below depicts a typical laptop multimedia capacitive sensing button pad.

This design is used in many of today's laptops, including HP and Dell. Figure 2 below depicts a partial notebook design with capacitive multimedia buttons in production.
