Marvell Introduces NVMe Controller for DRAM-less PCIe 3.0x2 SSD
Marvell recently introduced a new low-cost small-size SSD controller, the 88NV1160, which can be used to design small-size SSDs in M.2 and BGA packages. The 88NV1160 supports today's and tomorrow's various types of NAND flash, LDPC error correction, NVMe protocol and other features of today's SSD controllers, eliminating the need for external DRAM buffering, thus reducing the BOM cost of future SSDs.

The Marvell 88NV1160 is a 4-channel controller that supports PCIe 3.0 x2 interface, NVMe 1.3 protocol (except AHCI), and various types of NAND flash memory, including 15nm TLC, 3D TLC, and ONFI 3.0 interface at speeds up to 400MT/s 3D QLC. The 88NV1160 controller is powered by a dual-core ARM Cortex-R5 CPU and is equipped with an embedded SRAM with a hardware accelerator to optimize IOPS performance. The chip supports Marvell's third-generation LDPC error correction technology (also known as NANDEdge ECC) for high endurance in ultra-thin TLC or 3D QLC memory drives.
The 88NV1160 controller is specifically tailored for low-cost SSDs, which is why it does not support SLC and 2D MLC NAND. The 3D QLC SSD with 88NV1160 controller is expected to have a maximum capacity of 1 TB, enough to support entry-level SSDs (as well as solid-state storage solutions for tablets, ultrabooks and other types of computing devices). Regarding performance, Marvell said that the maximum read speed of such SSDs is 1600MB/s.

Marvell's new product uses a 28nm manufacturing process in a 9 mm x 10mm TFBGA package for SSD (M.2-1620 or smaller) and M.2-2230/2242 drives in BGA packages. The 88NV1160 controller is powered from a 3.3V/1.8V/1.2V supply to meet the M.2 standard.
The 88NV1160 is not Marvell's first controller that does not require an external DRAM cache. Marvell also offers a low-cost 88NV1120 with SATA interface and a 88NV1140 with PCIe 3.0 x 1. The controllers mentioned above are based on two ARM Cortex-R5 cores, using Marvell's third-generation LDPC, to support today's popular NAND flash types (15nm 2D TLC and 3D TLC/QLC). The 88NV1160 is Marvell's latest DRAM-less controller designed for more advanced SSDs with read speeds up to 1600MB/s. The 88NV1160 is a low-cost driver solution, because unlike the high-end product 88SS093 (or slightly lower-class similar product 88SS1094), it does not support 2D MLC and SLC NAND flash, and can not take advantage of the 8 NAND channel, so it does not Need to support PCIe 3.0 x 4.

The developer did not disclose when the first SSD based on the 88NV1160 controller will be available, but said the chip is ready to be sampled globally. In addition, Marvell also said to provide users with a turnkey firmware solution to speed time to market.
