Which LED and laser are the next generation of projection light sources?
With the rapid development of the projection industry, the problem of light source has always been an indispensable topic of discussion in projection equipment. From the perspective of consumers to the cost of manufacturers, the speed of light source development is directly related to the current advancement of projection technology. Faced with the current market, the choice of light source is still very important, and the replacement of the projection light source is also silently carried out. Today we will talk about two popular light sources, LED and laser.
In recent years, LED attention has been in the volatility period, and the past five years is the best time for LEDs. Laser technology has been a hot spot since its birth, and the future will only get more and more hot. Whether laser can replace LED is an inevitable trend, but there are still some problems to be solved in the short-term replacement of LED. Among them, the more controversial issues are basically concentrated on the color gamut and brightness.
Lasers can go beyond LEDs because the color gamut is wider and in fact not complete. From the color gamut alone, the white LED is smaller than the standard color gamut, and the three-color LED is only slightly above the standard range; and the gamut of the laser is much larger than the standard color gamut. Because of the limitations of technology, color gamut is only an idealized mathematical model, which often does not meet such requirements in reality. Because at this stage, the laser that humans can control has only a few bands and cannot cover all of them, so its color gamut is also incomplete. In the same way, the same is true for LEDs.
Brightness is still the focus of choice
In terms of new light sources, the true advantage of lasers over LEDs is brightness. The LED projector is only up to 1000 lumens, and the laser is much brighter than it. From the performance of the products on the current projection market, pure LED projection has certain advantages in color gamut, but it is definitely lost to laser projectors in terms of brightness. The world's first laser projectors have a brightness of 2,000 lumens, and there is room for improvement; the brightest projectors at this stage can reach tens of thousands of lumens.
It is undeniable that all illuminators are hot, and the effect of heat is to reduce the life of the use. At this stage, most laser light sources can operate for 10,000 hours in normal mode and 20,000 hours in energy-saving mode. According to the existing data, the laser light source will start to have obvious brightness decay after 5000 hours, and the brightness will be 40% after 14000 hours, but nearly 60% of the brightness can still be used normally. Compared with the traditional light source of 2000 lumens, the energy-saving mode has a limit life of 6000 hours, and the advantage of laser technology in life is highlighted.
Laser technology as a projection light source is a future development trend, but it is also a fact that LEDs cannot be completely replaced in the short term. However, we still firmly believe that with the development of technology, the laser light source will be popularized in the projection field, and then it will trigger the display technology revolution, thus subverting the traditional display field.
