5G standard is only a preliminary large-scale commercial still needs time

At the beginning of this year, domestic Huawei mobile phones opened up the US market again. US operator Verizon announced the abandonment of its plan to sell Huawei Mate 10 in the US following AT&T. Some media reports said that it is related to the strategic deployment of 5G communication between China and the United States.

The fierce competition of 5G technology is no longer a secret. Recently, at the pre-communication meeting of the World Mobile Communications Conference held in Barcelona, Huawei officially released the world's first 5G commercial chip and terminal, and said that it will launch 5G industrial modules and car boxes.

What is the international status of China's 5G technology and applications? Is it really necessary to "force the United States" to use the ban on sales to control its promotion?

Technical game has become the norm

5G technology research and development has been a hot spot for various manufacturers in the world.

As early as around 2009, various telecom equipment manufacturers and operators began research and development of 5G technology. Up to now, 5G technology competition has entered the stage of “white-hot”, including AT&T, NTT, China Telecom and other operators. They are also striving to be the first company to offer 5G services.

The 5G standard is only preliminary. It will take time for large-scale commercial use.

So, is China banned for this reason, is it related to the US 5G strategic deployment?

In response to this question, Zhou Zhigang, a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Microsystems of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in an interview with the Journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that “Huawei’s ban on sales reflects the conflict between the technical and commercial levels.” Such competition conflicts have been around for a long time. It is not something that is unique in the 5G era.

"5G as a globally oriented technical standard and norm, manufacturers based on such standards to do equipment and terminals must be expected to sell to the world, Huawei for the global market, certainly do not want to be China, Europe and North America three major markets, certainly want to have A larger scope." Zhou Zhigang said.

Wang Huiming, professor of the Department of Information and Communication Engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong University, also said that communication technology as part of the future information society infrastructure, the game between the two sides and even more parties is a normal state, should be faced with a mature mentality.

Change is not just communication

Communication technology has experienced "big brothers" from the 1G era, "telephone text messages" in the 2G era, "video calls" in the 3G era, and "mobile internet" in the 4G era. With the increasing demand for interconnection, the 5G era is coming to people.

Zhou Zhigang said that 5G technology will definitely have a relatively large improvement in terms of transmission rate, network delay and other indicators. "The 5G network structure will be more flexible than before, supporting multi-service, multi-standard, multi-site complex groups. The network, part of the core network user plane function sinks to the base station, reducing the delay, the speed will be faster."

Security certification is also a highlight of 5G technology. 5G uses high-band technology to support large-capacity directional transmission. "This will not be interfered or affected, and the directionality and confidentiality will be better. The number of users will be more." Zhou Zhigang said.

Before the 2G, 3G, 4G communication technology paved the way, the popularity of 5G technology means more profound changes, this change is not only the technical level, but also the social structure level.

Every time I recall the short-lived 3G era, Wang Huiming always feels that "the market changes are difficult to predict." When talking about the 5G era, she saw a clear development line: "5G is not just a communication problem, it will become A more basic facility in the information society extends to all corners of life."

5G higher transfer rates and larger traffic will "inspire a lot of new things." In Wang Huiming's view, 5G's enhanced mobile broadband will provide AR/VR games and smooth video experience for the audience; its low latency and high reliability will benefit the development of smart medical and intelligent driving; its large scale The characteristics of the giant connection provide the possibility for the popularity of the Internet of Things and smart home.

Large-scale commercial use still takes time

The formation of standards is the first step in business applications. Driven by the global market, the 5G standard is gradually taking shape.

In December 2017, the International Mobile Standardization Organization (3GPP) released the first 5G NR (New Air Interface) standard. In June 2018, 3GPP will launch the first version of the 5G international standard, which means that 5G standardization will continue to take an important step forward.

In November 2016, 3GPP has determined the channel coding technology scheme for 5G enhanced mobile broadband (eMMB) scenarios. The Polar Code is selected as the coding scheme of the control channel. The scheme is driven by Huawei as the core representative. It is believed that this means that Chinese manufacturers have gradually increased their voice in the formulation of 5G standards.

Wang Huiming said that in the 4G era, the guidance and support of the relevant state departments, plus the technological strength accumulated by ZTE, Huawei and other enterprises, China has occupied an increasingly important position in the formulation of 5G standards.

However, "I want to take the lead in occupying the 5G technology research and development highland, in fact, it is a test of the technical skills of various equipment manufacturers. The 5G standard system is very large, and the polarization code is only a small part of it." Zhou Zhigang said that Huawei and ZTE are the representatives. If you want to become a "leader", you still have to continue to accumulate.

The game is hot and the prospects are clear, and the future of 5G may not be as fast as imagined.

Talking about the final landing of the 5G standard, Zhou Zhigang said: "The 5G standard that is said now is only a preliminary standard. It will definitely take a year or two to complete. Before this, the manufacturers will consider commercial interests and publicity considerations. Do some experimentation and demonstration."

Wang Huiming believes that 5G's technology development and user demand are mutually reinforcing. "The technical elements of 5G should be added in turn, and the formulation of standards is gradually evolving. And the large-scale commercialization of 5G needs to wait until the technology deployment and market. After the heat double matures."
