Altera Announces Altera 40-nm Arria II GX FPGA Passes PCI-SIG PCIe Express 2.0 Specification Test

Altera Corporation announced that its 40-nm Arria II GX FPGA complies with the PCI Express (PCIe) 2.0 specification. The device successfully passed the PCI-SIG compatibility and versatility test of the PCI-SIG laboratory and is now on the PCI-SIG comprehensive supplier list. Arria II GX FPGA's x8-way configuration supports PCIe Gen1 endpoint applications.

Altera's mid-range Arria II GX FPGAs currently available integrate transceivers with data rates up to 3.75 Gbps, and a configurable hard-core PCIe interface is embedded in the device. The device's hard IP module implements the PCIe Gen1 (PIPE) PHY-MAC, data link, and processing layer. This IP module can be flexibly configured to meet the needs of end-point and root port applications. Its x1, x4, and x8 configurations meet PCIe 2.0 requirements.

Luanne Schirrmeister, senior director of product marketing for Altera components, commented: "Arria II GX FPGA is the only mid-range FPGA that complies with PCIe 2.0. Compared with competing FPGAs, its performance is 25% higher, the price is 50% lower, and power consumption is also 50 %. "

Arria II GX FPGAs are targeted at applications that use mainstream protocols, such as PCIe and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE). The device has 16 3.75-Gbps transceivers, 256K logic unit (LE) and 8.5 Mbits internal RAM.
