STMicroelectronics: hybrid and electric vehicle solutions

In hybrid power plant (HEV) applications, high-voltage battery power is mainly aimed at traction systems, but also includes cars with other electrical systems.

Movement and drive: The movement and drive of the vehicle system are realized by electric motors. For example, ST can provide complete solutions for motor control systems such as electric traction, power steering, and manual gearboxes. These solutions are based on its product portfolio, power electronics system expertise, and application experience in regional laboratories.

Power management: In the power conversion phase, when the battery is to be interfaced with all power systems, in addition to basic functions and communication features, effective and efficient power management functions will also be required. With ST's rich experience in power management of industrial systems and automotive products, and its broad product portfolio, it is fully able to propose a complete set of solutions to meet the power management requirements of HEV systems.

Electric vehicles / hybrid vehicles-AC / DC (charger)

Charging the battery through the main power supply is a mandatory configuration for electric vehicles and an optional configuration for hybrid vehicles. Therefore, the power converter is becoming a widely used universal device. The figure below shows a conversion system for charging DC high-voltage battery packs with standard single-phase and three-phase industrial Power Supplies.

Automatic transmission of hybrid electric vehicle

The clutch and gearbox of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) / electric vehicle (EV) are driven by a motor. This electronic control system can accurately and quickly perform various operations of clutches and shifts. The following figure shows ST products used in this application.

Electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles are driven by electric motors charged by energy storage systems. Currently, the power system uses multiple mechanisms, and there are multiple solutions to charge the battery. Standard solutions include DC-AC converters, which can work in bidirectional mode and support both power output and charging processes. When extremely high power ratings are required, a bidirectional DC-DC converter can be used. This converter is inserted between the high-voltage battery pack and the Power Inverter to boost the DC bus voltage from the battery pack.

Embedded electronic systems must meet high standards to ensure that the power utilization rate reaches the optimal level under various conditions. ST has a rich power switch (IGBT, MOSFET) product portfolio and various ICs and microcontrollers, which can provide the best solution for electric vehicles.
