Nature Foundation criticizes EU's barrier to China's energy-saving lamps
Recently, the European Commission proposed to continue the anti-dumping tax rate on energy-saving lamps imported from China. WWF (World Wildlife Fund) believes that the proposal is disappointing and unfair, and with the EU to improve energy efficiency and curb climate change. The grand goal is seriously inconsistent.
“This is a narrow trade protectionism that conveys a regressive message to producers in developing countries that they will be excluded from the market for cleaning products that are being promoted by high quality environmental standards expected by European consumers. "This shows the contradictions of EU policy: on the one hand, Europe promises to achieve ambitious energy efficiency goals, while on the other hand, it continues to include from China," said WWF Trade and Investment Advisor Evian Hoff. Tariffs are imposed on green products such as imported energy-saving light bulbs."
The use of energy-saving lamps can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 23 million tons per year, equivalent to 0.5% of the total EU greenhouse gas emissions. The compact fluorescent lamp (CFL-i for short) is one-fifth the power consumption of an ordinary incandescent lamp, and the service life is more than five times that of the latter. At present, compact fluorescent lamps are three to six times more expensive than incandescent lamps, making consumers discouraged from energy-saving products. Emerging economies produce products that significantly reduce the environmental impact of the EU, and help accelerate technological advances. China's energy-saving lamps are a typical case.
In the EU, about 80% of households still use ordinary incandescent lamps, and more than 2 billion incandescent lamps are still sold in the EU market each year. Correspondingly, the sales of energy-saving lamps in the same period is 27 million.
WWF believes that the EU has failed to align its trade tools with its policies, policies and goals in the areas of environment, climate and energy conservation. Evian Hoff pointed out: "If we take seriously the 'green product zero tariff policy' proposed by EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson, we need to conduct a comprehensive review of European trade protection tools."
